      No-one remembered with any accuracy how it had happened, but The Reeks had erupted through quake and circumstance along a great south-to-north fault that separated Dolour and Lugubria. The mountain ranges had overtaken geology, merging everything from MacGillycuddy’s to The Sperrins, forming a great spine that traversed the island. Dolour lay west and south, Lugubria north and east. The names of the ranges were almost forgotten, the great spinal agglomerate range was remembered as MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, it being the epicentre.

      Carrauntoohil had penetrated through the horizon. Locals called it Fallen Mountain. They revered the site as sacred because the Fallen Emperors’ sarcophagii were entombed in its cavernous heart. But neither Borrada nor Lorelei hoped for its piety to reach this tank commander before they left.
